FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Key Information You Should Know

To start a business in the UK, you’ll need to select a business structure, such as a sole trader, partnership, or limited company. Register with HMRC (the UK’s tax authority), and if you’re setting up a limited company, register with Companies House as well. You’ll also need a UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) and, in some cases, a VAT (Value Added Tax) number.

The key difference is that a self-employed sole trader has unlimited liability, meaning the owner is personally accountable for business debts. A limited company, however, is a separate legal entity with limited liability, protecting the owner’s personal assets. Limited companies are subject to corporation tax, whereas sole traders pay income tax on their profits.

The deadline for tax filing in the UK (Self Assessment) is usually 31st January of the following tax year. Required documentation includes proof of income, expense receipts, bank statements, employment forms, and any other financial documents related to business or personal income.

To issue invoices in the UK, you must be registered with HMRC and have a UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) or a VAT number if applicable. The invoice should include essential details such as the company name, address, registration number (for a limited company), a description of services or products provided, and the total amount, including VAT if applicable.
